Founded in 1979, the International Dada Archive is a scholarly resource for the study of the historic Dada movement. The Archive has compiled a comprehensive collection of documentation and scholarship relating to Dada.

The collection of the International Dada Archive is made up of works by and about the dadaists including books, articles, microfilmed manuscript collections, videorecordings, sound recordings, and online resources. Primary access to the entire collection is through the International Online Bibliography of Dada, a catalog containing approximately 60,000 titles. This collection is housed in various departments of the University of Iowa Libraries; most of its holdings are in either the Main Library or the Art Library.

The Digital Dada Library provides links to scanned images of original Dada-era publications in the International Dada Archive. These books, pamphlets, and periodicals are housed in the Special Collections Department of the University of Iowa Libraries and include many of the major periodicals of the Dada movement from Zurich, Berlin, Paris, and elsewhere, as well as books, exhibition catalogs, and broadsides by participants in the Dada movement.

The Archive has also microfilmed a number of public and private manuscript collections containing material on the Dada movement and on individual dadaists. Detailed finding aids exist for each of these microfilmed collections.

Scholars are welcome to visit the Archive to conduct research. Those planning to visit from out of town should make appointments well in advance, since access to some of the Archive's resources is limited when the curator is away.

For further information about the International Dada Archive, or to make an appointment to visit the collections, please contact the curator, Timothy Shipe.

The Digital Dada Library provides links to scanned images of original Dada-era publication in the International Dada Archive. These books, pamphlets, and periodicals are housed in the Special Collections Department of The University of Iowa Libraries.

Each original document has been scanned in its entirety. These are page-image files only, not searchable full-text files.

The Digital Library is divided into two sections. The first section includes some of the major periodicals of the Dada movement from Zurich, Berlin, Paris, and elsewhere. In many cases, these are not complete runs of the periodicals. While the International Dada Archive does own complete reprints of most of these periodicals, we generally only include original issues housed in Special Collections. In a few cases, for the sake of completeness, we have included reprints of issues for which we do not own originals; in those cases, we have omitted any copyrighted materials such as new prefaces and critical annotations. The second section includes books by some of the participants in the Dada movement, as well as some of the more ephemeral Dada-era publications, such as exhibition catalogs and broadsides.

These documents are provided for research purposes only.

The International Dada Archive focuses its collection and study on the following individuals. The links from individual names below emphasize resources and publications of the International Dada Archive and the University of Iowa Libraries.

The International On-line Bibliography of Dada is the on-line catalog of the International Dada Archive at the University of Iowa Libraries. The catalog includes materials in all formats that have been cataloged for the collection, including books, essays in books, periodical articles, manuscripts, sound and videorecordings, and other media related to the Dada movement and to the individual dadaists. These materials are located throughout the University of Iowa Libraries, but are primarily housed in the Main Library and the Art Library. Most of the manuscript holdings are on microfilms that were made in various public and private collections in Europe and North America in the early 1980s, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Jerome Foundation.

The International Dada Archive has no staff to process interlibrary loan requests. Once you have identified a book or article of interest in the database, please use your library's interlibrary loan services to obtain the item if your library does not own a copy. Your library should treat the International Dada Archive as a "lender of last resort." For interlibrary loan purposes, the International Dada Archive should be treated as a special collection within the University of Iowa Libraries. Unpublished manuscript material cannot normally be loaned.
